Uchitta Theyyam (ഉച്ചിട്ട തെയ്യം)

Palakkil Kalari Temple, Cherukunnu,Kannur, Kerala

Prominent and beautiful Goddess in Mantra Murthys and Pancha Murthys.. The coal that fell from the Jyotsis of Lord Agni fell on the lotus which is the seat of Lord Brahma and from it a beautiful Goddess was born with divine Jyotsis. The story goes that Lord Brahma offered that goddess to the great god from there through Kamadeva and later on the request of Goddess Bhumi, she came to earth to take care of Shishtajana and drank in human form. But there is another story to hear that Uchitta is Yogamaya Devi who is Sri Krishna's sister.. Being a daughter of fire, this Theiyakolam is a funny woman who sits on the fire, lies down and plays with embers.. This goddess is known as Uchitta Bhagavathy in Adiyeri Mutt. It is interesting that none of the above mentioned stories are mentioned in Devi's thottam songs.. The utterances of this deity are in human form. She gave birth to a beautiful woman. The conception of Goddess Parvati. She surprised Mahesha by sitting on the fire caused by Shiva's anger. She laughed loudly. Legend has it that it was the goddess who shouted loudly that Kamsa's son was born on earth. Malayan and Velan communities tie this theyam.
